Saturday 2nd June 2007 - eventually saw the demise of Hut 4. Following the work done to the two “new” units it was decided that at last Hut 4 had to go. After several Saturdays spent emptying the hut it was eventually time to turn it into a flat pack.

The first job was to remove the Aluminium cladding from the outside of the hut as this was required elsewhere. Whilst this was going on the fibreglass roof was removed by the simple act of cutting around the edge with an angle grinder, lifting it off and folding it in half to fit on the trailer.

Once the “ally” had been removed the insulation was removed just leaving the wood frame. Inside all that was needed was to remove the shelves etc.

For safety reasons the windows were then removed before the walls were removed leaving just the floor. Surprisingly, for it’s age, the floor was in reasonable condition a further surprise when the hut was emptied was to find a water supply standing upright - on checking if it was live the answer was “yes” this just meant a little careful cutting around the pipes before the floor was lifted revealing the wood frame no surprises under there except a family of voles (or shrews) was discovered when we lifted out one of the railway sleepers acting as a foundation. They were carefully covered up and given a new concrete roof hoping they were not disturbed too much. At the end of the day it was all piled onto two trailers and removed for burning.

I gather it burnt very well, all we are left with now is the hole and the realisation that there is a considerable difference in levels between the ground the new buildings are on and that which was behind hut 4

I sense another “All Day Saturday working party” coming soon.....
